We’re Torie and Eric. We made the cookbook we wished existed when we were starting our own families.
We believe you shouldn't have to choose between a recipe that's “healthy” and one you're excited to cook. Pregnancy shouldn't require an entirely separate cuisine. And feeding a family shouldn't mean cooking three different dinners.
We made Eating for Life around that idea: understand what your body needs, cook really good food, and make it work for the life you're actually living.
We came to this project by different routes. Torie is an integrative nutritionist whose own struggle with infertility led her even deeper into the relationship between food and health, and ultimately to working with women navigating their own fertility journeys. Eric came through the kitchen door, working as a line cook and bread baker before an unexpected turn behind the camera launched a career photographing cookbooks.
Then we became parents.
As we cooked for ourselves and our growing families, we noticed that pregnancy nutrition is discussed in fragments. Your doctor talks about food safety. One book dives deep into nutrition and treats recipes as an afterthought. Another shares traditions without much scientific context and calls for a lot of hard-to-find ingredients. Social media jumbles it all together into an endless stream of conflicting advice.
It was the early 2020s, and we still couldn't find a single resource that brought it all together in a practical, joyful, beautiful, and evidence-informed way.
So we decided to create it.
Torie brought nutrition science, clinical experience, and relentless research. Eric brought a cook’s instincts and twenty years of experience contributing to cookbooks. We both brought years of timeworn recipes we were already cooking for the people we loved. At first we thought we were making a pregnancy cookbook, but over five years of writing, cooking, testing, and raising our families, it became something bigger.
The result is Eating for Life: 120 recipes, evidence-based nutrition guidance, and practical tools for feeding yourself and the people you love through pregnancy, postpartum, and well beyond.
We’re grateful you’re here and hope you cook the heck out of this book.
